It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.

A new study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may be as effective as testosterone for treating benign prostate hyperplasia.

Slightly higher than Viagra's ability to increase blood flow to the penis, the drug has already been studied in a placebo-controlled trial in rats that looked at testosterone-only treatments for erectile dysfunction.

In the original study, the researchers found that in the rats, sildenafil (brand name Viagra) was as effective as testosterone-only treatment for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia, though in a larger study in rats that looked at the use of testosterone for treating erectile dysfunction.

Sildenafil is the brand name for the PDE5 inhibitor sildenafil, which works by blocking an enzyme in the body called PDE5. It is taken by mouth and is taken orally in tablet form.

Researchers used the data to try to understand why the drug was more effective when given in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in rats.

"When we look at the placebo-controlled trials in rats, we see that the response to the drugs was higher in rats receiving the testosterone-only treatment," said lead author Dr. Steven Nissen, from the University of Chicago and the research group at the Cleveland Clinic's Cleveland Clinic. "This is very interesting because the results show that in addition to increasing blood flow, there is a greater ability of the drug to improve erectile function."

The results have been published in the journal Clinical Pharmacology.

In a separate study, the researchers found that testosterone-only treatment significantly increased the response of sildenafil to sildenafil in rats. "We found that sildenafil significantly increased the response to the testosterone-only treatment in both male and female rats," Nissen said.

The effect of testosterone was even greater in the rats given the testosterone-only treatment, with no difference between the two groups, he said. A placebo-controlled study is still needed to confirm the findings, he said, but the results "could be useful in helping to determine whether testosterone-only treatment is safe."

The study was conducted in three different rat species: female, male, and male rats.

In each rat, the researchers measured the amount of sildenafil in the urine and found that the drug was more effective when given in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study in rats. They compared the testosterone-only group with the testosterone-only treatment and found that sildenafil had a greater effect on the blood flow in the penis than testosterone-only treatment. In addition, the effect of the drug was greater in the male rats given testosterone-only treatment and in the male rats given testosterone-only treatment, the researchers said.

The study authors noted that testosterone-only treatment produced more improvement than testosterone-only treatment in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.

"This is a significant study, and we are hoping to find out whether this drug is effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia," Nissen said.

It is not yet known how testosterone works to increase blood flow to the penis, but researchers believe the drug is capable of improving erectile function.

This study was funded by Johnson & Johnson, the U. S. Agency for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The authors have no known conflicts of interest.
